The United States (US) passed 700,000 coronavirus-related deaths on Friday, according to a Reuters report, as officials released antiretroviral drugs to protect adults and people working in high-risk activities.

The country reported an average death toll of more than 2,000 a day this past week, which is about 60% of the peak deaths in January, according to a Reuters analysis of public health data.

United States is still leading the world in COVID-19 cases deaths, accounting for 19persent and 14persent of all reported infections and deaths, according to Reuters. Globally, epidemic is estimated to have killed more than 5 million people.

Delta's highly transferable variance led to an increase in COVID-19 cases that occurred in mid-September before falling to the current level of about 117,625 cases per day, based on a seven-day shift rate.

That is still more than 10,000 cases per day top US infectious disease specialists Drs. Anthony Fauci said it should be reached to end the health crisis.

While national hospital numbers have declined in recent weeks, some say, especially in the south of the country, they are preventing the practice of recording large increases, putting pressure on health care systems.
